Two condensed sans that help fight for a better future
Loud & Proud
For over thirty years, Stonewall’s been a leading voice for LGBTQ+ equality in the UK. To mark a new era of activism, they worked with JKR Global on a refresh. As part of that, JKR commissioned a pair of custom-ish* display typefaces. Loud is all caps, Proud is slightly more flexible, but they’re both focussed, assured and warm. The visual references are pretty direct: the condensed sans serifs seen on placards, posters and leaflets used in historic LGBTQ+ rights protests in the UK. A lot of Stephenson Blake-y sans. These two are a little less mannered, less eccentric, more frank.
The closing quote’s from Sara Ahmed’s 2015 essay You are oppressing us!
My nominal fee for this project went to Stonewall. At a time when the UK’s Labour and Conservative parties are capitulating to anti-trans bigotry, you can support them here or Scotland’s leading LGBTQ+ campaign org here.
*The bones of Loud & Proud can be found in F37’s Judge, which I drew the core of.
